Birth dates of men on the 1639 Milford
list of nine and list of 44
by Conrad W. Terrill and Nancy Tyrrel Theodore, 24 June 2011
We were able to find birth dates for four of the men on the list of nine and 15 on the list of 44. The following are not biographical sketches (refer to the cited references for those), but simply compilations of information we regarded as important in establishing or guessing a birth date. When forced to guess we resorted to the following assumptions: 1) A man would have been 21 or over when admitted to Milford church; 2) A man would have been 21 or over when first married; 3) A man would have been older than his wife; 4) A man would have been over 21 and under 30 when his first child was born. These assumptions are of course not universally good—they are simply reasonable “average” assumptions that we adopted. What is most important to us is the man’s age on 20 Nov. 1639, the date of the lists. In cases where our assumptions are not good we think it more likely that the man was older (possibly far older) than our estimate, and less likely that he was younger.
List of nine (in alphabetical order by last name)
1. John Baldwin
(assumed b. about 1614 to 1621, so of age about 18 to 25 in 1639.)
John Baldwin Sr. (note that John Baldwin
Jr., bapt. 1635, was a son of Sylvester and Sarah) came with other Baldwin
families from co. Bucks, and his relationship to them is not known. His children by his first wife, Mary, were
baptized in 1643, 1648, 1649 and 1651.
In 1653 he married Mary Bruen, and their children were born in 1654,
1655, 1658, 1660, 1665(?), 1663 and 1665.
He was admitted to Milford church on 19 Mar. 1648, and was buried 21
June 1681. (All from Abbott p. 14). Assuming that he was over 21 and under 30
when his first child was born he would have been born about 1614 to 1621.
2. Andrew Benton, bapt. 15 Oct. 1620 (so
of age 19 in 1639)
Per John H. Benton, Andrew Benton was bapt. 15 Oct. 1620 in Epping, Essex, England (Roberts p. 120). This is in close agreement the information on his Hartford tombstone inscription (he died 31 July 1683, aged 63 years). He united with Milford church on 5 Mar. 1647/8 (when he was 27). His children by his first wife were baptized in 1650 (when Andrew was 29), 1651, 1653, 1656 and 1658, all but the last in Milford. His children by his second wife, in Hartford, were baptized in 1674, 1676, 1679 and 1680 (when Andrew was 59). (All from Abbott pp. 101-102.)
3. William Brookes (assumed b. about 1615 to 1620, so of age about 19 to 24 in 1639)
William Brooks was
admitted to Milford church on 11 June 1648.
His first wife, Bridget, admitted 8 Sep. 1644, died 23 June 1663 (Abbott pp. 118-119). Around 1666 he married Sarah Wheeler (widow
of William) (Abbott p. 799), who died
at Milford 5 June 1709 at age 88 (Jacobus-MVR
p. 172). So Sarah would have been born
about 1621. Assuming that William Brooks
was a little older than Sarah, he would have been born about 1615-1620.
4. Henry Lyon, b. 1623 or 1624 (so of age 15 or 16 in 1639)
This date of birth is based on his age at death: Mr. Henery Lyon died 23 Mar. 1707/8 aged 84 years, and was buried in the Old Burying Ground, Newark, NJ (RootsWeb: The Old Newark Burying Ground). According to dgnweb.net, his children by his first wife were born in 1653 (when Henry was about 29), 1654/5, 1655/6, aft. 1658, 1663/4, 1665/6, ca. 1668 and 1669/70 (the first six probably in Fairfield, CT and the last two probably in Newark, NJ). His children by his second wife were probably born 1690/1 and 1692/3 (when Henry was about 69), in Elizabethtown, NJ.
5. Joseph Northrupp
(assumed b. about 1621, so of age about 18 in 1639)
He was admitted to Milford church on 27 Mar. 1642, and died 11 Sep. 1669 (Jacobus-MCR p. 30). His children by his wife, Mary (Norton), were born in Milford in 17 Jul. 1649, 1651, 1654, 1656, 1661, 1664, 1666, 1670 (Northrup, p. 1). Assuming that he was 21 or over when he was admitted to Milford church, he would have been born before 1622; and assuming he was 30 or under when his first child was born, he would have been born after 1620. So we assume he was born about 1621. We’ve seen other guesses of 1617-1619 and 1623. And we have noticed that RootsWeb, in America the Great Melting Pot, informs us that this Joseph Northrup was born in 1619 in Wilkersfield, Yorkshire, son of Joseph and Katherine (Birdsey), which sounds plausible; but no basis is provided for the information.
6. Robert Plum, b. 30 Dec. 1617 (so of age almost 22 in Nov. of 1639)
Robert Plumb was born 30 Dec. 1617 at Ridgewell Hall, Essex, England, and married Mary Baldwin on 9 Jan. 1642 (Benton p. 20). Mary was baptized 19 Feb. 1625/6 (Baldwin p. 41 and Benton p. 21). Robert was admitted to Milford church on 4 Aug. 1644, and died 13 July 1655 (Jacobus-MCR p. 31). His children by Mary were born or baptized in 1645, 1646, 1648, 1650, 1653 and 1655 (Baldwin pp. 51-62).
7. William Slough
(assumed b. about 1610 to 1614, so of age about 25 to 29 in 1639)
William Slough married Elizabeth Prudden,
daughter of James Prudden, who was baptized in Kings Walden, co. Hertford, on
17 Dec. 1615 (see James Prudden). Their
children were born in 1648 and 1649.
He was admitted to Milford church 26 Mar. 1648, and was excommunicated
and put to death in New Haven in 1652 (Abbott
p. 647). Assuming that he was older than
Elizabeth he would have been born before 1615, and assuming he was 30 or under
when his first child was born he would have been born after 1618. We assume that he was born not long before
1615 and was over 30 when his first child was born.
8. Roger Terrel
(assumed b. about 1612 to 1621, so of age about 18 to 27 in 1639)
Roger Terrill married Abigail Ufford probably in the early 1640’s. He was admitted to Milford church on 28 July 1644, and she on 3 Nov. 1644. Their children were baptized at Milford in 1644 (the first three), 1647, 1650, 1652, 1654, 1655, 1656, 1660 and 1662. (All from Abbott p. 737.) He died in Milford about 1681-82 (inventory dated 22 Feb. 1682). Assuming he was 21 or over when married, he would have been born in or before the early 1620’s. Assuming he was under 30 when his first child was born (say it was about 1641), he would have been born after 1611. So we assume that he was born about 1612-1621.
9. Robert Treat, bapt. 25 Feb. 1624/5 (so of age 14 in 1639)
Robert Trott [Treat], son of Richard and Alice (nee Gaylard), was baptized 25 Feb. 1624/25 at the Church of St. Andrew and St. Mary, Pitminster, probably in the hamlet of South Trendle, now (1893) in the parish of Trull, Somerset, England (Treat pp. 9 and 31). He married first in 1647 Jane Tapp, daughter of Edmund. Their children were baptized 3 Sep. 1648 (when Robert was 23), 1650, 1652, 1654, 1656, c.1660, 1661 and 1662. (All from Abbott p. 768.) He and Jane were admitted to Milford church on 19 Apr. 1649 (when Robert was 24), and Robert died in 1710 (at age 85) (Jacobus-MCR p. 32).
List of 44 (in alphabetical order by last name)
1. John Astwood, b. 1608-1609 (so of age 30 or 31 in 1639)
John Astwood was born in 1608 or 1609 in Little Hadham, Hertfordshire, England (Great Migrations—1634-5, vol. 1, A-B, p. 92). His name appears on a 3 April 1635 Custom-house list, “Husbandman Jo: Astwood, 26” (Hotten, p. 46). His first wife was Martha ___, by whom he had children Samuel and Hannah. He married for the second time in 1640, to Sarah (Bryan) Baldwin, widow of Sylvester. He was admitted to Milford church in 1640, was one of the seven pillars of the church, was chosen one of the five judges on 20 Nov. 1639, and died in London, where he had been sent as a representative of New Haven Colony, in 1653. (All from Abbott p. 12).
2. Thomas Baker, b.
Sep. 1620, or in 1617/18 (so of age 19, or 21 to 22, in 1639)
Thomas Baker was b. Sep. 1620, or in
1617 or 1618 (he d. 30 Apr. 1700 aged 82), in Ashford, co. Kent, England, according
to an old worn family record (Watts). He was admitted to Milford church 12 Dec.
1643, and dismissed to East Hampton, L.I., in 1650. We don’t know when he first married, but a
child was baptized at Milford in 1650.
(All Abbott p. 14).
3. Timothy Baldwin (assumed b. 1613 or earlier, so of age 26 or more in 1639)
Timothy Baldwin, brother of Nathaniel and Joseph below, was a son of Richard and Isabell Baldwin of Cholesbury, co. Bucks, England. Timothy was the eldest per his father’s will, and Joseph, mentioned after Nathaniel in the will, was presumably youngest (Baldwin p. 23 and pp. 403-404). We don’t have precise birthdates for any of the three. Timothy m. by 1642 Mary Wells, who was b. c. 1618 and d. 1647 at Milford. They joined Milford church 5 Mar. 1643. Timothy d. 17 Jan. 1664. He had children bapt. 2 Apr. 1643, 1644, 1645, 1650, 1655, 1658 (Abbott p. 60). Assuming that he was under 30 when his first child was born, Timothy would have been born after 1613. Assuming he was born earlier than his wife he would have been born before c. 1618. We assume he was probably born in 1613 or earlier (see Nathaniel Baldwin and Joseph Baldwin, below).
4. Nathaniel Baldwin (assumed b. 1614 or earlier, so of age 25 or more in 1639)
Nathaniel Baldwin was a son of Richard and Isabell Baldwin of Cholesbury, co. Bucks, England. He married Abigail Camp before 9 Jun 1644 (when she was admitted to Milford church as Abigail Baldwin). Their first two children were baptised at Milford in June of 1644. Nathaniel had other children bapt. 1645, bapt. 1648, b. 1650, b. 1652, b. 1655. (All from Baldwin p. 23 and pp. 406-408.) Abigail Camp was probably a sister of William Camp (Abbott p. 43). Nathaniel was probably born in 1614 or earlier (see Joseph Baldwin).
5. Joseph Baldwin (assumed b. 1615 or earlier, so of age 24 or more in 1639)
Joseph Baldwin was a son of Richard and Isabell Baldwin of Cholesbury, co. Bucks, England (Baldwin p. 23 and pp. 479-482). He was admitted to Milford church on 23 June 1644, and his wife Hannah on 25 July 1644. Their first four children were baptised 23 June 1644. Sons Joseph and Benjamin were born prob. ~1640 and ~1642. According to Abbott, Joseph married Hannah Whitlock 10 Nov. 1636 at High Wycomb, Bucks. (All from Abbott p. 27.) Assuming that this is true, and that Joseph was 21 or more when he married, then he was born in 1615 or earlier, and brothers Nathaniel and Timothy were born earlier yet.
6. Richard Baldwin, bapt. 25 Aug. 1622 (so of age 17 in 1639)
Richard Baldwin, son of Sylvester and Sarah (Bryan) Baldwin, was bapt. 25 Aug. 1622 at Aston Clinton, co. Bucks, England. He m. Elizabeth Alsop in 1643 (she was b. in 1625). He was admitted to Milford church in May of 1641, and she 5 Feb. 1642/3. Richard frequently appeared as attorney before the General Court at New Haven. Richard’s father had died in June of 1638 on the passage over from England with his family, leaving a widow and six children: Sarah (bapt. 1621, who married Benjamin Fenn), Richard, Mary (bapt. 1625/6, m1. Robert Plum, m2. William East), Martha (bapt. 1628), John (bapt 1635), and Ruth. (All from Baldwin p. 41 and pp. 77-85, and Abbott pp. 51-52.)
7. John Birdsey, b. 1615 or 1616 (so of age 23 or 24 in 1639)
John Birdsey was
born in 1615 or 1616 (he d. 4 Apr. 1690 at age 74 in Stratford). He came from Reading, co. Berkshire, England,
in 1636, first to Wethersfield and in 1639 to Milford. He married Phillipa Smith, dau. of Rev.
Henry, at Wethersfield. He and Phillipa
were admitted to Milford church 23 Aug. 1640.
Children were bapt. 4 Apr. 1641 and 1642. (All from Abbott p. 103.)
8. Frances Bolt
Francis Bolt was first at New Haven, and then admitted to Milford church 9 Feb. 1639/40. He died in 1646, as he is mentioned in church records as deceased. (All from Abbott p. 104.) We have no good information on which to base an estimate of his birth date.
9. Henry Botsford, bapt. 15 Jun. 1608 (so of age 31 in 1639)
Henry Botsford was bapt. 15 Jun. 1608 at Sundon, co. Bedford, England (this is believed to be correct by Jacobus). He was a son of Edward and Alice (Prior) Botsford of Chalgrave, co. Bedford. His wife Elizabeth was admitted to Milford church on 4 Oct. 1640, and he on 25 Jul. 1644. Children were bapt. 15 Aug. 1641 (when Henry was 33), 1643, 1645 (2), 1647, 1649. (All from Jacobus-Botsford p. 69 and 63.)
10. Nathaniel Briscoe
According to Abbott, Nathaniel Briscoe, son
of Nathaniel, was baptized at Little Messenden, co. Bucks, Eng., on 18 May
1629; but this is ridiculous, of course, since a 10-year-old (in 1639) would
not have been admitted as a free planter.
He married Mehitable (___), was admitted to Milford church 20 Apr. 1644,
and died in Milford in 1683. Children of
Nathaniel and Mehitable were baptized 10 Jun. 1646/7 [sic] (when Henry would have been 17 or 18) and 1649. (All from Abbott p. 116.)
11. Alex: Bryan, bapt. 23 Sep. 1602 (so of age 37 in 1639)
Alexander Bryan, son of Thomas & Frances (Bowling) was bapt. at Aylesworth, co. Bucks, Eng., 23 Sep. 1602, and died at Milford, 20 Nov. 1679. He married first in 1631, Anne Baldwin, who was bapt. March 1605/6 and died 20 Feb. 1661. He married second Mrs. Susanna (___) Whiting Fitch, widow of William Whiting and Samuel Fitch. Alexander’s son Richard, probably born England, married in 1649 Mary Pantry. (All from Abbott p. 124.)
12. Thomas Buckingham (assumed b. about 1603 to 1610, so of age about 29 to 36 in 1639)
Thomas Buckingham was one of the seven pillars
of Milford church, and had headed the Wethersfield group to Milford. He died in Boston, where he had gone to
procure a new minister for the church in Milford, on 16 Jun. 1657. His wife Hannah died 28 Jun. 1646, and
perhaps Thomas had a second wife. His
children were born in 1632, 1636, 1641, 1643 and 1646. (All from Abbott p. 137-138.) Assuming that he was over 21 and under 30
when his first child was born, he would have been born about 1603 to 1610.
13. John Burwell (assumed b. about 1596 to 1601, so of age 38 to 43 in 1639)
According to Abbott, and probably originally from E. R. Lambert, who went to this place in 1838 on Burwell business, John Burwell came from Hemel Hampstead, co. Herts, England. He may have married three times: 1) Hester or Esther Winchester, in 1622 at Minsden Chapel, co. Herts; 2) Alice Heath, on 24 Jun. 1635 at Minsden Chapel (she died 19 Dec. 1666 at Milford. His children were baptized 25 Sep. 1625, ?, ?, 1640, 1644, 1646 and 1647. (All from Abbott pp. 162-3.) Assuming he was 21 or over when he first married, and under 30 when his first child was baptized, he would have been born about 1596 to 1601.
14. Nicholas Camp, prob. bapt. Apr. 1597 (so probably of age 42 in 1639)
According to Abbot, Nicholas Camp was probably baptized at Nazeing, co. Essex, England, in April of 1597. He was admitted to Milford church on 2 Nov. 1643, and died in Milford before Feb. 1655/6. He married: 1) Sarah (___), who died 6 Sep. 1645; 2) Edith (___) Tilley, widow of John of Windsor; and 3) on 14 Jul. 1652, Katherine (___) Thompson, widow of Anthony of New Haven. His first child, Nicholas Jr., was born c. 1631 (see below), and other children were baptized in 1643, 1645 (twins), and 1647. (All from Abbott p. 182.) Actually, because the baptism record of Nicholas Camp Jr. is on the same page as that of John Ufford, we know that he was baptized in April of 1627 (link to DOR-Terrill article (click on photocopies)). If Abbott is correct about Nicholas Sr.’s baptism date, then Nicholas Jr. was baptized when Nicholas Sr. was 30.
15. George Clarke Senr (assumed b. about 1609 to 1616, so of age about 23 to 30 in 1639)
Deacon George Clark, AKA Senior or Carpenter, died at Milford on 10 Jun. 1690. He married Sarah (___), who died at Milford on 22 Sep. 1689. Their children (from family record by George Clark Bryant, prepared for pub. by Jacobus): were born c. 1638, 1644, 1645 and 1648. (All from Abbott pp. 203-4.) Assuming George Clark Sr. was over 21 and under 30 when his first child was born, he would have been born about 1609 to 1616 .
16. Georg Clark Junr (assumed b. about 1611 to 1618, so of age about 21 to 28 in 1639)
George Clark Jr. was no relation to George
Clark Sr., as far as anyone knows.
“Farmer” George Clark died in Aug. of 1690. He married Sarah (___), who was admitted to
the church 22 Nov. 1640 as wife of George Clark Jr. and died 19 Jul. 1689. George himself, “husband to Sarah above
mentioned.” was admitted 31 Feb. 1640/1.
Their children were born in 1640, 1642, 1644, 1646, 1647, 1649, 1652,
1644 and 1656. (All from Abbott pp. 202-3.) Assuming that George
Clark Jr. was over 21 and under 30 when his first child was born, he would have
been born about 1611 to 1618.
17. Samuel Coley (assumed b. about 1612 to 1619, so of age about 20 to 27 in 1639)
Samuel Coley was of Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1631. He was admitted to Milford church on 25 Oct. 1640, and wife Ann on 14 Feb. 1640/1. His will was made 22 Mar. 1677/8, and inventory taken 26 Sep. 1684. He first married in 1640 Ann Prudden, daughter of James. She died 3 Oct. 1689. Their children were baptized in 1641, 1643, 1646, 1648, 1651, 1654 and 1657. (All from Abbott pp. 213-4.) Assuming Samuel was 21 or over when married, and under 30 when his first child was born, he would have been born about 1612 to 1619.
18. William East (assumed b. about 1614 to 1619, so of age about 20 to 25 in 1639)
William East came with the Prudden group, and died in Milford 27 Aug. 1661. He was admitted to Milford church on 8 May 1640. Little is known of him, or whom he married. A Solomon was bapt. 1643. A William East married Mary (Baldwin) Plumb (widow of Robert Plumb) 16 Mar. 1675/6. William East was “cast out” after Mr. Prudden’s death, and restored 17 Aug. 1660. (All from Abbott p. 243.) Assuming he was 21 or over when he was admitted to Milford church, he would have been born before 1620. Assuming he was under 30 when Solomon was born, he would have been born after 1613. So we assume he was born about 1614 to 1619.
19. Benjamin Fenn (assumed b. about 1611 to 1617, so of age about 22 to 28 in 1639)
Benjamin Fenn, son of James Fenn and (Joan)? (nee Turney), was baptized (no date given) at Stewkley, co. Bucks, England (Bryant p. 130). He married first, in 1638, Sarah Baldwin, dau. of Sylvester. They were admitted to Milford church on 20 Sep. 1640. She died 29 Apr. 1663. He married second Susannah Wade, 12 Mar. 1664, and died in 1672. His children were born or baptized 20 Sept 1640, 1642, 1645, 1647, 1650, 1665, 1667, 1669, 1672. (All from Abbott pp. 250-1.) Assuming he was 21 or over when first married and under 30 when his first child was born he would have been born about 1611 to 1617.
20. John Fletcher (assumed b. about 1612 to 1619, so of age about 20 to 27 in 1639)
John Fletcher came to Milford from Wethersfield, and married Mary Ward before 1641. He was admitted to Milford church on 14 Nov. 1641. His children were baptized 31 Oct. 1641, 1643, 1645, 1649 and 1652. (All from Abbott p. 267.) Assuming he was over 21 and under 30 when his first child was born he would have been born about 1612 to 1619.
21. William Fowler
William Fowler, probably from Aylesbury, co. Bucks, was one of the seven pillars of Milford church. His father, also William Fowler, who also came to Milford and was one of the five judges chosen on 20 Nov. 1639, died 25 Jan. 1660 at age 88 (so born 1572). William Jr. first married Mary Tapp, daughter of Edmund & Anna, baptized 10 Dec. 1615 (see Edmund Tapp); he married second Elizabeth (Alsop) Baldwin, widow of Richard Baldwin. His children were baptized in 1645, 1649, 1655, 1658, 1660, 1664 and 1669. (All from Abbott p. 280.) Assuming he was over 21 and under 30 when his first child was born, he would have been born about 1616 to 1623. Bit if he was older than his first wife he would have been born before 1615. Considering that his father was born in 1572, and that William was named after him, he could have been born considerably earlier than 1615. We hesitate to guess in this case.
22. Jasper Gunn, b. 1605-1606 (so of age 34-35 in 1639)
“Jasper Gonn, 29” appeared on the 14 July 1635 Custom-house list for the ship Defense (Hotten, p. 107), so he was born in 1605 or 1606. On the same list was an “Ann Gunn, 25.” Jasper settled in Roxbury and was made freeman 25 May 1636. He married Christian (___), who died probably Oct. 1690 in Milford. Jasper and “Mary” were admitted to Milford church 25 Apr. 1641. He removed to Hartford around 1647 and returned to Milford later. (All from Abbott pp. 316-317.)
23. Edmond Harvy (assumed b. about 1597 to 1604, so of age about 35 to 42 in 1639)
Edmond Harvey was married once before he
married Martha (___), and his first wife was the mother of the older
children. On 13 Sep. 1640 he was
admitted to Milford church, and on 20 Jun. 1641 Martha was admitted. He died in Fairfield 22 May 1648. An inventory of his estate was made 21 Jun.
1648, and he mentions (where?) his wife, a daughter in England age 22, two
daughters age 18 and 14 in New England, a son 7 and a daughter 2. (All from Abbott pp. 329-30.) Assuming that the mention of the daughter age
22 was made in a 1648 will, she would have been born about 1626. Assuming that Edmond was over 21 and under 30
when she was born, he would have been born about 1597 to 1604.
24. Philip Hatley (assumed b. before 1621, so over 18 (probably far over) in 1639)
Philip Hatly was admitted to Milford church 9 May 1641. He was dismissed to Coleman Street church, London, by vote on 19 Aug. 1639. (All from Abbott p. 330.) Assuming he was 21 or over when admitted to Milford church, he would have been born before 1621.
25. George Hubburt (assumed b. about 1601 to 1608, so of age about 31 to 38 in 1639)
George Hubbard came from Wethersfield and was admitted to Milford church 15 Jan. 1643. His wife, Mary (Bishop?), was admitted 4 Aug. 1644. He was dismissed to Guilford 6 Oct. 1650. His children were born or baptized in c. 1630, 1633, 1638, 1642 and 1644. (All from Abbott p. 376.) Assuming that George was over 21 and under 30 when his first child was born, he would have been born about 1601 to 1608.
26. John Lane (assumed b. before 1614, so of age over 25 in
1639)
John Lane came to Milford from Wethersfield
with wife Kattareen (Benton p.
15). Abbott lists children Katherine (m.
8 Nov. 1653), Isaac (bapt. 1641) and Sarah (bapt. 1642) (Abbott pp. 400-401).
Assuming that his daughter Katherine was at least 18 when she married,
then she would have been born before 1635.
Assuming that John was over 21 when this daughter was born, then he
would have been born before 1614.
27. Thomas Lawrence (assumed b. about 1617 to 1621, so of age about 18 to 22 in 1639)
Thomas Lawrence was admitted to Milford church 4 Dec. 1642; his wife was admitted 11 Feb. 1645. Their children were baptized 9 Aug. 1646 and 1648 (after Thomas’s death). (All from Abbott p. 407.) Assuming that Thomas was 21 or over when admitted to Milford church, and that he was under 30 when his first child was born, he would have been born about 1617 to 1621.
28. Richard Miles, (probably) bapt. 27 Aug. 1598 (so of age 41 in 1639)
Richard Miles was a resident of Wormley, co. Hertford, England, in 1636, and came to New England as a member of the group of Puritans shepherded by Rev. Peter Prudden. “The contributors are reasonably sure, however, of the identity of the New Haven settler with the “Richard Myles sonne of Rychard Myles & Als his wyfe” who was baptized at Great Munden, co. Hertford, 27 August 1598, though they wish to caution readers that a possibility of error remains.” Miles was chosen one of the five judges for Milford on 20 Nov. 1639. He apparently decided to stay in New Haven, where he lived until his death in 1667. (All from Coddington2 pp. 129-130.)
29. John Peacocke
(assumed b. about 1613 to 1620, so of age about 19 to 26 in 1639)
John Peacock married Joyce (___) (who was
admitted to Milford church 19 Dec. 1651), and was dismissed to Stratford church
7 Dec. 1651 (?). Their children were
baptized or born 16 Jan. 1641/2, 1643, 1647 and 1650. (All from Abbott pp. 527-8.) Assuming he was over 21 and under 30 when his
first child was born, John was born about 1613 to 1620.
30. Richard Platt, bapt. 6 May 1604 (so of age 35 in 1639)
Richard Platt was baptised at Ware, co.
Hertford, England, on 6 May 1604. He
married in Roydon, co. Essex, 26 Jan. 1628/9 (when he was 24), Mary Wood, who
was baptized in Roydon 10 Nov. 1605 (Coddington3,
p. 232). Their children were baptized 11
Nov. 1629 (when Richard was 25), 1632, 1633, 1634, 1636, 1640, 1643, 1645 and
1649 (Abbott pp. 547-548).
31. James Prudden (assumed
b. about 1586 to 1587, so of age about 52 to 53 in 1639)
James Prudden apparently came from Kings
Walden, co. Hertford, England. He
married Sibil Mitchell in Kings Walden on 7 Apr. 1608, and they had daughters
Elizabeth, baptized 17 Dec. 1615, and Anna, baptized 8 Feb. 1617/18, both at
Kings Walden (Peck p. 28, Coddington1 p. 122). Sibil died 27 May 1618 (Peck p. 22, “(illegible) the wife of James”). James was admitted to Milford church on 13
Oct. 1639, and died at Milford in Aug. of 1648 (Jacobus-MCR p. 29). Assuming
James was 21 or over when he married, and that he was under 30 when his first
child was born, he would have been born about 1586 to 1587.
32. Mr. Peter Prudden, b. Dec. 1601 (of age almost 38 in Nov. of 1639)
Rev. Peter Prudden was born in Dec. 1601 per the published registers of scholars (p. 92 of Rev. Charles J. Robinson’s edition) at the Merchant Taylors’ School, London (Peck p. 1). S. Allyn Peck has deduced that his first wife was a Jane Thomas of Abergavenny, co. Monmouth, Wales, and that she and any children of the marriage apparently died before Peter Prudden came to America, in 1637 (Peck pp. 5-6). He married Joanna Boyse probably in New England, Their children were born in 1640, 1641, 1642, 1643, 1645, 1647, 1650, 1652 and 1653 (Prudden pp. 63-64). He was one of the seven pillars of Milford church, was ordained as pastor there on 8 Apr. 1640, and died in July of 1656 (Prudden pp. 30 and 39).
33. John Rogers
(assumed b. about 1613 to 1620, so of age about 19 to 26 in 1639)
John Rogers married Ruth (___) and was
admitted to Milford church 28 May 1642; she on 3 Nov. 1644. Their children were baptized or born 15 May
1642, 1643, 1645, 1647, 1649 and 1654.
John died in Milford in 1684.
(All from Abbott pp. 622-3.)
Assuming John was over 21 and under 30 when his first child was born, he
would have been born about 1613 to 1620.
34. John Sharman, b. 26 Dec. 1613 (so
almost 26 in 1639)
Rev. John Sherman was born at Dedham, co.
Essex, England, 26 Dec. 1613, and died at Watertown, Mass., 8 Aug. 1685. “His ancestry has received extended treatment
in several articles in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register,
and in The American Genealogist (1920) by Thomas Townsend Sherman.” (All from Jacobus-Sherman
p. 129.) He was admitted to Milford
church 8 Nov. 1640 (when he was ~27), married first Mary Gibbs, who died 8 Sep.
1644, and married second Mary Launce.
His children were baptized or born ?(say 1638, when he was 25), 15 Nov.
1640, 1642, 1644, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ? (All from Abbott p. 645.)
35. Thomas Samford, b. 1607-8 (so about 31
or 32 in 1639)
Thomas Sanford, son of Ezekiel, was
born 1607-8 in Hatfield Braod Oak, Essex, England, came to America 1632-4, and
died in Milford, Ct., 1681 (Sanford p. 52). One record states that he married first
Dorothy Meadows, of Stove, England. He
married second in 1636/7 (when he was about 29) Sarah (___) of Dorchester, who
died in Milford 1681. He was admitted to
Milford church 9 Jan. 1642 (when he was about 34), and she 15 Dec. 1642. “(See the Genealogy of the family, also New
Haven Families by Jacobus.)” Thomas’s
children were born or baptized circa 1635 (when he was about 27), ca. 1639,
1642, 1643, 1644, 1646 and 1648. (All
from Abbott pp. 638-639.)
36. Henry Stonhill
(b. before 1621, so over 18 in 1639, probably much older)
According to Abbott, Henry Stonhill was
probably the son of Henry and Agnes (nee Baldwin). He came to Milford with the Prudden
camp. He was admitted to Milford church
13 Jun. 1641, and dismissed to London, where he removed 1648. He had from the will of his uncle Richard
Baldwin in 1632/3 30 li. and land in Drayton Beachamp. His mother was Agnes Baldwin, dau of Henry
and Alice, baptized Aston Clinton July 1579, d. 1622. Her husband and three children survived
her. (All from Abbott p. 713.) Assuming he was 21 or
over when admitted to Milford church, Henry would have been born 1620 or
earlier. If he was indeed the son of
Alice (bapt. 1579) and Henry Sr., his birth date may have been considerably
earlier than 1620.
37. Edmond Tappe
(assumed b. about 1584 to 1591, so of age about 48 to 55 in 1639)
Jacobus reported (Jacobus-Botsford
p. 58) that Calder referred to
“Edmond Tapp of Bennington.” There are
baptism records for children of Edmond Tapp in the Church of England parish
registers of Benington, Hertfordshire:
Edmund Tapp, baptized 20 Jul. 1626, and Jana Tapp (female), baptized 14
Feb. 1627. And there are baptism records
for children of Edmond Tapp in the Church of England parish registers of Great
Hadham, Hertfordshire: Edmond, baptized
30 Jan. 1613, and Mary Tapp, baptized. 10 Dec. 1615, both at Much Hadham. (All from LDS-FHL-1.) Much Hadham is about eight miles WSW of
Benington. This Edmond Tapp (the father)
is probably the Edmond Tappe of the 1639 Milford lists, but we can find no
in-depth examination of records pertaining to him. We know that our Edmond Tapp’s wife Ann wa
admitted to Milford church 26 Jun. 1642 and died 1659/60. Edmond himself died 1 Apr. 1653. In the late 1630’s he was living in New
Haven, in the Hertfordshire section with Peter Prudden. He was one of the five who received the deed
to Milford on 12 Feb. 1639, he was one of the seven pillars of Milford church,
he was one of the first five judges, and he was occasionally called “Mr.” He participated in the ordination of Rev.
Prudden. His daughter Ann married
William Fowler in 1645, and his daughter Jane married Robert Treat. (All form Abbott,
pp. 736-737.) Assuming that he was over
21 and under 30 when his first child was born (1613), he would have been born
about 1584 to 1591.
38. Thomas Tibbulls, born 1614 or 1615 (so of age 24 or 25 in 1639)
The name Thomas
“Tibbalds,” age 20, is found on the 19
Sep. 1635 Custom-house list of persons to be transported to New-England on the Truelove, the second name after
Zachariah Whitman and family (Hotten
p. 131). His name appears in
Wethersfield prior to 1639. He had
children baptized 11 Feb. 1643/4 (when he was about 30-31), 1644, 1645, 1651,
?, 1654 and 1657. His will was proved 1
June 1703. (All from Abbott pp. 745-746.) Assuming that he was the Thomas Tibbalds on
the 1635 Custom-house list (as seems very reasonable) he would have been born
about 1614 or 1615.
39. Micah Tomkins
(assumed b. about 1614 to 1621, so of age about 18 to 25 in 1639)
Also known as Michael, he was admitted with
his wife to Milford church 12 Dec. 1643.
A 1942 genealogy of the Tomkins family states that he was a son of
Randolph Tomkins who married first Katherine Foster, and second Hannah
Osborn. Micah’s children were baptized
or born 17 Dec. 1643, 1645, 1647, 1649 (2), 1655 and 1660. (All from Abbott
p. 763.) Assuming he was over 21 and
under 30 when his first child was born, Micah would have been born about 1614
to 1621.
40. Thomas Topping
(assumed b. about 1611 to 1618, so of age about 21 to 28 in 1639)
Thomas Tapping or Topping of Wethersfield
was recruited by Prudden to go to Milford.
He was admitted to Milford church 2 Jul. 1640. His children were baptized 2 Aug. 1640, 1644,
?, 1659 and ?. (All from Abbott p. 737.) Assuming he was over 21 and under 30 when his
first child was born, he would have been born about 1611 to 1618.
41. Thomas Uffott (assumed
b. about 1592 to 1599, so of age about 40 to 47 in 1639)
Thomas Ufford’s sons Thomas and John were
baptized in Nazeing, Essex, England, in 1623 and 1626 (see DOR-Terrill article).
His daughter Abigail is presumed to have been older than Thomas. Thomas Sr. joined Milford church 11 Feb.
1644/45. Abigail married Roger Terrill
in the early 1640’s. Thomas Sr. died in
Milford early in 1660. (All from Abbott
pp. 786-787.) Assuming Abigail was born
about 1621, and that Thomas Sr. was over 21 and under 30 when she was born, he
would have been born about 1592 to 1599.
42. Thomas Welsh
Thomas Welsh (AKA Welch) married Hannah Buckingham,
daughter of Thomas and Hannah, who was born in 1632 and died in 1684. He came with the Prudden party and was one of
the seven pillars of Milford church. His
children were baptized or born 12 Dec. 1652, 1655, 1658, 1660, 1664 and 1669. Thomas died in Milford 12 Aug. 1681. (All
from Abbott p. 793.) Assuming he was over 21 and under 30 when his
first child was baptized, he would have been born about 1623 to 1630. But since he was one of the seven pillars he
had to have been considerably older than this.
43. Thomas Wheeler
(assumed b. about 1610 to 1617, so of age about 22 to 29 in 1639)
Thomas Wheeler was admitted to Milford
church 9 Aug. 1640; his wife Joan was admitted 27 Sep. 1640. Their children were baptized or born 16 Aug.
1640 (2), 1642, 1643, 1646, 1648, 1650, 1653, 1655 and 1657. Thomas died 25 Nov. 1672 (Joan died in 1673). (All from Abbott
p. 797.) Assuming that one of the two
children baptized 16 Aug. 1640 was born in 1639, and assuming that Thomas was
over 21 and under 30 when this child was born, Thomas would have been born
about 1610 to 1617.
44. Zachariah Whitman, b. about 1595 (so of
age about 44 in 1639)
“Zacharia Whitman, 40, Sara Whitman, 25, and
Zacha: Whitman, 21/2“ appear as a family on the 19 Sep. 1635
Custom-house list of persons to be transported to New-England on the Truelove (the name “Thomas Tibbald’s,
20” appears on this same list) (Hotten
p. 131). According to Abbott, Zachariah
and Sarah were married 10 Jun. 1628, and she points out that the Bryant
manuscript has that they were married 10 Jun. 1630 in Chesham, co. Bucks
(corroborated by LDS-FHL-2).
Sarah Brisco was baptized 9 Nov. 1606.
Zachariah was one of the seven pillars of Milford church, made presiding
elder Jan. 1645. He was also one of the
five judges chosen on 20 Nov. 1639. He
died in Milford 25 Apr. 1666. (All from Abbott p. 801.) Assuming the age in 1635 is correct (Sarah
was actually about 29, not 25), then he would have been born about 1595.
