AMOS TURREL or Turrell (roll 2428) – Pension S. 14735. [Ink has faded and the pension application is extremely difficult to read and decipher.] Served from Conn. As private, for 11 months and 12 days, 1775-1776, under Capt. Bennet in Col. Whiting’s Conn. Regiment. Pension application dated 29 April 1833, Bridgeport, Fairfield co., Conn., where Amos, 75 years old, resided at the time. He was b. 3 Jan 1758 in Newtown, Fairfield co., Conn., and always lived in Fairfield, town of Weston. There is an extensive service record (7 pages of deposition, 3 pages attesting from witnesses), but no other family data.

{This is likely the Amos5 Terrill of Jonathan4, Nathan3, John2, Roger1. A History of the old town of Stratford and the city of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Part II, by Samuel Orcutt, published 1886, “Tashua Burying-place in Trumbull,” p.1040 shows gravestone record:In memory of Amos Turrel who died June 11, 1835 AE. 78 years. [b. 1757] Elizabeth, wife of Amos Turrel, died Dec. 2, 1822, aged 72.” Also, see TAG*, pp. 37-40. Amos served in Capt. Wheeler’s Company, Connecticut in Revolutionary War#, Vol. II, p. 520. ntt}

AMOS TYRRELL (roll 2433) – B.L.Wt. 21821-160-55 {Bounty Land Warrant}. Served 3 months in 1778 as private in a New York Regiment. Rachel, widow of Amos, of the town of Darien, Genessee co., New York, aged 86 yrs, applied 29 March 1855 for widow’s pension. Amos enlisted from Hebron, Washingtorn co., N.Y.; his application papers are microfilmed in such faded condition that they are impossible to read. Samuel Tyrel (q.v. below), his brother, served with him. There is much other data, including typed Pension Office replies, dated 9 July 1931 and 3 August 1932, to queries for pension data. These papers tell us that Amos Tyrrell m Rachel Bolton 3 March 1790 in Hebron, N. Y., and he d. 6 Oct 1840 in Darien, Genessee co., N.Y., aged about 80 yrs. His children who grew to “manhood” were Lydia, Rachel, Cyrus, Lovisa, and Amos. Amos, in 1855, was 56 yrs old and living in Darien, N.Y.; his signature on one document is written Amos Tyrell. A grandson William Tyrell (as he signed on a document) was 32 yrs old in 1856 and resident of Batavia, N. Y.

{Amos5 descends Ezra4-3, Roger2-1 as shown in TAG *, pp. 37-42. All three of Ezra4’s sons, Amos5, Samuel5 and William5 served in the Revolution (see pension records below for Samuel5 and William5). ntt}

EPHRAIM TERRILL or Terrill (roll 2358) – Pension S.11528. In the fall of 1777 Ephraim Terrill served 4 months in a militia company of Cheshire, Conn. He was drafted in early summer of 1779 and served 6 months as private in Col. Bradley’s Regiment in Conn. His pension application, dated 7 August 1832, details an extensive service record. A second documenet, also dated 7 August 1832, states he enlisted in 1780 at New Haven in the “Army of the United States”, and served from April to October; extensive details of the service are given. At the time of the pension application, Ephraim was living in Cheshire, New Haven co., Conn. He stated that he was b 27 Nov 1756 in Woodbridge, New Haven co., Conn., which was a Society of Milford when he was b; and that he was living in Cheshire when he was called to service, having come there at about age 16. There is no family data and no Pension bureau letters. The spellng most often used in these documents is Terril.

This Ephraim Terril is most probably the son of Ephraim4 and Hannah (Beecher) Terrill, given in Abbott, “Families of Early Milford, Conn.” (1979), p. 741, and in Jacobus, “Families of Ancient New Haven” (1931, reprinted 1974), p 1725. The ancestry would be Ephraim5 (b 1756 Woodbridge), Ephraim4 (m 1756 Woodbridge, living Cheshire 1790), Ephraim3 (bpt 1702 Milford, d 1784 Cheshire), Daniel2, Roger1. [All places are in Conn.]

HEZEKIAH TERRILL (roll 2358) or Tyrell (roll 2433, but no documents there) – Pension W. 22393. Served as private in the Conn. Continental Troops. Three pension applications made by his widow Betsey. In the first one, dated 26 July 1855, Betsey Terrill [sic], aged 79 yrs on 8 May 1855, was living in Mayfield, Fulton co., NY. An extensive service record is given for Hezekiah. Betsey stated Hezekiah was born North Stratford, Conn., 2 July 1759; they married 19 Nov 1790 in Coughnawaga {Caughnawaga}, Montgomery co., NY (now Broodolbin {Broadalbin}, Fulton co., NY); and Hezekiah d. 9 April 1821. “Her name before marriage was Betsey Taylor.” In a second application, dated 19 April 1860, Mrs. Betsey Tyrell [sic] was aged 85 yrs and living in Mayfield, Fulton co., NY. No dates of service are given, but the date of m to Hezekiah Tyrell [sic] is 19 Nov 1790 and his date of d is 21 August 1821 [differs from first application]. In a third application, dated 8 Feb 1869, Betsey Terrill [sic] was age 95 and resident of Kingsboro, Fulton co., NY. There are other depositions and much correspondence, but no further family details.

{The clues for Hezekiah’s ancestry in the penison applications point to him being a part of the Nathan3, John2, Roger1 line. Nathan3 died in North Stratford c. 1746. Nathan3’s youngest son, Hezekiah4, was b 1743, but he died about age 21, c. 1764, unmarried. The family of Nathan3’s eldest son, David4, b. 1723, is not well documented. However, in the Families of Old Fairfield††, page 950, David4 is shown as marrying Ann Odell, daughter of Hezekiah Odell, so it’s possible that David4 and Ann would name a son after Ann’s father as well as David’s deceased brother. David4 was living in Stratford as of 1754, and Hezekiah’s widow says Hezekiah was born in North Stratford in 1759. So, while the ancestry of Hezekiah5 from David4, Nathan3, John2, Roger1 is unproven, it is a logical possibility. For the line from Roger1 to David 4, see TAG* pages 37-40 ntt}

ISAAC TURRIL or Turrill (roll 2428) – Pension S.14736. At first pension application, dated 10 Sept 1832, Isaac Turrill [sic], age 69 yrs, was of Lawsville, Susquehanna co., Penn. Enlisted at Milford, Conn., and served for 11 months as private in Capt. Baldwin’s Company of Col. Holbrook’s Regiment of Continental Troops (last of July 1782 to 1 July 1783) guarding the seacoast and supplies. A short service record is given. In another deposition, dated 10 Sept 1832, Isaac Turrel [sic], “of Great Bend township (late of Lawsville township)”, both in Susquehanna co., answered personal questions, stating he was b Milford, New Haven co., Conn., 16 August 1763, was living in Milford at time of service, and stayed there until 1802. Then he moved to Washington, Litchfield co, Conn., and in 1818 moved to Susquehanna co., Penn. Deposition, dated 29 May 1833, by Peleg Baldwin, age 66, of Middletown, Susquehanna co., Penn., testified to Isaac Turril’s [sic] service, having known him 60 years. Pension bureau recaps this information in a letter, dated 5 Nov 1931, replying to a query of 16 Oct 1931 from Mrs. H. B. Johnson, of the Susquehanna County Historical Society, Montrose, Penn. There is some other correpondence, but no family data. [Isaac Turril is the same as Isaac Terrill, son of Samuel and Ann (Baldwin) Terrill, in Susan Abbott, “Families of Early Milford, Connecticut (1979), p 743. He is also brother of Anna Terrill, wife of Peleg Baldwin, the attestor. The Terrill ancestry is Isaac6 Samuel5-3 John2 Roger1.]

Another Isaac Terril (also spelled Turrell on another record) appears on Revolutionary War service and payroll records (Microfilm M-860, Terrill on roll 51: Swim-Thorn, Turrell on roll 52: Thoro-Tur), as enlisting 20 August 1777 for a period of 3 years being discharged 20 August 1780. He served as a private in Col. Jeduthan Baldwin’s Regiment of Artificers of the Continental Troops. No other information to identify him, but he is probably not the same Isaac Turril of Susquehanna co. The only Isaac in the pension records is the one of Susquehanna co., and he stated that his service began in 1782; he would have been only 14 years old in 1777.

{The second Isaac Turrill appears in Connecticut Men in the Revolution 1776-1783 (973.3 C76), p. 294, in the Corps of Artificers, Capt. Pendleton’s co. He enlisted 20 August 1777 for 3 years and was from Waterbury, New Haven, CT.Captain Pendleton’s Company of Artificers, wholly raised in Connecticut, was the only body of men from the State that served south of Virginia during the Revolution. At least twenty of its men were from Waterbury.” (History of Waterbury**, pages 465-466.) Artificers were engineers. The only Isaac in Waterbury at the time would be Isaac4 the son of Josiah3, John2, Roger1. He was b in 1735, was m 25 Feb 1762 in Waterbury to Sarah Smith. ntt}

JACOB TYRRELL (roll 2433) – Pension S.31445. Served as a private in Massachusetts Continental troops for 3 years, from January 1777 to his discharge on 14 Jan 1780. At the time of his first application for pension, dated 11 July 1820, Jacob, age 61 {b.c. 1759}, was a resident of New Salem, Franklin co., Mass. In a renewed application, dated 14 August 1832, he was 72 yrs old {b.c. 1760}. There are more documents, but no family data.

{The History of New Salem, page 22, tells us that “Jacob Tyrrell was at White Plains and Monmouth and Valley Forge.” The Soldiers and Sailors## shows only one Jacob of Massachusetts who served for three years: “Jacob Turrell – Pelhem; Return of men raised to serve in Continental Army from Capt. Thompson’s Co., 4th Hampshire County Regt.., as returned by Lt. Col. R. Woodbridge; Residence – Pelham; Enlisted for town on Pelham; Joined Capt. Shay’s Co.., Col. Putnam’s Regt.; Term – 3 years to expire 1 Jan 1780. (Vol. 16:199).” Jacob was in the census at New Salem, Hampshire co. (didn’t become Franklin co. until 1811) in 1790, 1800 and 1810. Name always spelled Tyrrell on the census. Vital Records of New Salem, Massaschusetts to the end of the year 1849, “New Salem Public Records” page 264, “TERRELL (see also Tyrrell), Jacob, grantee, 1802. f.d., Jeremy [Tirrell, Turrel. dup.], grantee, 1821-1830. f.d.” The abbreviation f.d. is for “Franklin County Deeds.” ntt}

JARED TERREL (roll 2358) – Pension S.18625. Served as private in Conn. troops. In his pension application, dated 28 July 1832, Jared, age 74 yrs, was resident of Waterbury, New Haven co., Conn. In Feb 1776 he substituted for his brother ?Inijah?/Injah? Terrel [handwriting is not deciperable, but the name is not Elihu, possibly another brother of Jared; q.v. above], and served 2 months as private, in New York and Brooklyn. Later he enlisted on his own several times. Jared Terrel was b. 25 Dec 1757 in Waterbury. There is much correspondence regarding the validity of the deposition, but no family data. The name is also spelled Jarad Terell in one place.

{Jared5 descends Moses4 Josiah3, John2, Roger1. See TAG* pp. 37-49. Jared is a cousin to Elihu (above). They both served in Capt. Lewis’ Company, Connecticut in Revolutionary War#, Vol. I, p. 407. The brother he served for was his eldest brother, Irijah, b. 13 May 1750. Also see Anderson’s History of Waterbury**, pp. 466 and Ap135-136. ntt} See original pension document and transcription.

JOEL TERRELL (roll 2358) – Pension S. 14664. Served as private in the United States Army, but names of officers, dates of service, or other details are not stated, except he was wounded in the battle of Guilford in North Carolina. A pension application is not among the records. There is much correspondence, including depositions for claims by a surviving daughter, Evelina. A Pension Bureau letter, dated 27 June 1939, summarizes the records, recapping an earlier Bureau letter dated 25 August 1915. At the time of receiving his pension (13 Dec 1813) Joel Terrell resided in Wake co., North Carolina. He died 26 Dec 1819 in Rutherford co., N.C. His age is not given in the claim. He was survived by his widow Martha, who d 19 March 1839 (in testimony of Evilina, but written 10 March in both Bureau letters) in Rutherford co., N.C. [The claim of Evilina A. Erwin has added (possibly by another hand later) her mother’s maiden name as Williams.]. The date and place of birth of Martha or date of marriage are not given. Four children survived the soldier, three of whom were living in 1856. The only named child is daughter Evelina A., who m Arthur Erwin 18 Jan 1825, in Rutherford co., N.C. In 1885 Evelina was aged 85 yrs, resident of Floyd co., Georgia, and only surviving heir of Joel. J. W. Terrell, grandson of Joel and Martha, in 1856 was living in Qualla, N.C., and in 1886 another grandson, Charley Erwin, son of the soldier’s daughter Evelina A. and Arthur, was resident of Pleasant Grove, Forsyth co., Georgia. Names of J.W. Terrell’s parents are not given, and there is no further family data in the claims.

JOEL TERRILL (roll 2358) – Pension W.4353. Served 3 years, from 1777, as corporal in Conn. troops. Joel Terrill, of Lorain co., Ohio, d 22 March 1825. A deposition, dated 9 Nov 1837, by Elihu Terrill, named as brother of Joel, states that Joel lived in New Haven co., Conn., until 1810, when he moved to Ridgeville, Lorain co., Ohio, residence of Elihu Terrill. A short military record of Joel, enlisting spring 1775 at New Milford, Conn., states that one commander was Israel Terrell. Elihu was a substitute for his brother for a short time in the war. Eunice Terril [sic] in a deposition dated 9 Nov 1837, stated she was age 79 on 9 Sept 1837 [i.e. b 9 Sept 1758], that she m Joel in December 1778, and that he d 22 March 1825. Giving more on his service record, she stated that Joel lived in Waterbury, New Haven co., Conn., at the time of enlistment. She repeated some of this in another deposition for widow’s benefit, dated 15 Nov 1837 and given at Elyria, Ohio. A bible record, furnished by David Beebe, Belilnda Beebe, and Molly Terrill, gives the following statistics:

Joel Terrill [sic] b 13 July 1757
Eunice Hodge b 9 Sept 1758 & m 30 Dec 1778
Wylls b 15 Feb 1780
Polly b 5 May 1785 d 12 April 1805 ae 19y 11m 7d

A Pension Bureau letter, dated 10 Dec 1923, gives all these matters clearly. There is other correspondence, but no petition by Joel for pension, only by his widow Eunice.

JOHN TERRILL or Terril (roll 2358) – Pension S.37484 – Served 2 yr 6 mos as a private in Continental Troops from Pennsylvania. The pension application, dated 29 August 1818, is by John Terril [sic], age 66 yrs, of Bourbon co., Kentucky. A short record of his service shows he enlisted from Carlisle, Penn. There is also a schedule of his estate. A Pension Bureau letter, dated 27 May 1934, gives all of the above, and includes the facts that John’s wife was 73 yrs old in 1820, and they had children; the wife and children are not named. There is other correspondence of inquiry for service records.

JOHN TURRILL and Polly, widow of John, and heirs of Polly (roll 2428) – Pension R.10770. Claims service in Conn. [The microfilm is very faint, with faded ink, and difficult to read.] Main information is in a letter of inquiry from Orang Merwin to the Pension Bureau, dated 2 April 1853. The letter is from New Milford; the state is not specified but is probably Conn. Mr. Merwin identified himself as a child of John Turrill, noting that Polly Turrill is the second wife of John Turrill [but Orang does not claim her as his mother]. The father’s service record is recited. A letter from New Milford, dated 15 April 1854, is from Miner Turrill. He appears to be another heir and administrator of Polly Turrill identified as widow of John. Other letters, from D. S. Boardman of New Milford and dated 30 March 1853, are in execrable, nearly undecipherable handwriting. There is no pension application, only letters of inquiry, apparently never answered by the Pension Bureau. The pension request seems to have been denied. [This John Turrill is probably John Terrill, per data in Orcutt, “History of New Milford and Bridgewater, Conn.” (1882, reprinted 1976), pp 776-777, where John is called a soldier in the Revolution. John Terrill, was b 16 March 1756, and d 19 Feb 1829. By his first wife Elizabeth Buck, he had 6 children, one of whom was Minor Terrill, b 13 Jan 1802. John m/2 Polly [Stilson] 13 Oct 1819; she d 27 July 1858. The ancestry is John5, Caleb4, Daniel3-2, Roger1 Abbott, “Families of Early Mlford, Conn.” (1979) p. 737-740.]

NATHAN TERRILL (roll 2358) – Pension W.4083. Served 1 yr 10 mos as a private, from 1775-1777, with Connecticut troops. Pension application, dated 25 Sept 1832, by Nathan Terrill, age 77 yrs, of Clinton township, Knox co., Ohio, gives his service record in detail. Upon being questioned, Nathan Terrell [sic] answered he was b 12 April 1775 [sic] [1755 is more likely] in New Milford, Litchfield co., Conn; he enlisted from New Milford, where he was living; and continued to live there until 1717 [sic] [probably 1817 was intended] when he moved to Ohio. A widow’s petition for pension, dated 29 June 1837, by Dorothy Terril [sic] age 81, states she moved to Knox co., Ohio in 1816, she m. Nathan 16 Feb 1778, and Nathan d. 24 January 1834. Town records of New Fairfield, Conn., show Nathan Terril [sic] m Dorothy Phelps 26 Feb 1778 at New Fairfield, Fairfield co., Conn.; and Joana, dau. of Nathan & Dorothy Terril, b 13 March 1779. A deposition by Elijah Terrill [sic], dated 29 June 1837, states he is son of Nathan and Dorothy, and that he has one sister b March 1779. Eliljah, 46 yrs old, was born in Litchfield co., Conn. There are numerous other depositions and correspondence to get the vital statistics. No other family data. This Nathan Terrill is Nathan5, Paul4, Ezra3, Roger2-1 (courtesy of Nancy T. Theodore).

PRESLEY TERRIL or Terrill (roll 2358) – Pension S.38430. Served as private in a Virginia Regiment. In his pension application, dated 3 July 1820, Presley Terrill, aged 58 yrs, was living in Woodford co., Fayette district, Kentucky. A short record of service has him enlisting in a Virginia regiment, but no dates are given. Testimony by Archibald Terrell (signature), also Terrel, has Presley Terrill/Terrell d 23 aug 1835. There is no family data, but a Pension Bureau letter, dated 27 May 1937, has all of the file data above.

SAMUEL TIRRELL (roll 2393) – Pension S17148. Served 2 yrs as a private in Conn. troops. The pension application dated 22 Aug 1832, gives details of his military service. It states that Samuel Tirrell, aged 90, was b. 20 Dec 1742 in Milford [Conn.] and living there at the time of application. A letter, dated 1 Jan 1851, from his son, David Tirrell, inquires about the pension. David was living in Milford, New Haven co., Conn., at the time. This Samuel Tirrell must be same as Samuel5 Terrill, father of Isaac and Ann Terrell (see above under Isaac Turril), in Abbott “Families of Early Milford, Conn.” (1979), p. 742. The ancestry is Samuel5-4-3 John2 Roger1.
